The wheelchair wheel cover includes a cover hub, radially extending disk and an integral radially outer wall that extends axially from the disk to a cover inboard edge. The cover hub includes a bore that receives a fixed bolt. The bolt passes through a wheel bearing with an inner race and an outer race. The bolt also passes through the frame of a wheelchair and screws into a nut. When the wheel cover is non-rotating, tightening the nut forces the cover hub against an inboard washer, forces the inboard washer against the inner race and forces the inner race against the frame. If the wheel cover is to rotate a thrust bearing is provided between the head of the axle bolt and the cover hub and the inboard washer is forced toward the outer race. The disk can be flat or sculptured and protects hands and fingers.
A brake attachment apparatus is provided for a wheelchair and includes wheelchair connector means for connecting to the wheelchair, brake operator arm means which extend horizontally along a portion of the wheelchair, brake operator arm hinge means connected to the wheelchair connector means for connecting the brake operator arm means to the wheelchair connector means, and wheel brake member means connected to the brake operator arm means. When a patient rises from a sitting position in the wheelchair or is in a standing position and sits down in the wheelchair, the patient exerts downward pressure on the brake operator arm means, and that downward pressure is transmitted to the wheel brake member means for applying braking pressure on wheels of the wheelchair to prevent the wheelchair from moving.
A leg exerciser for the wheelchair user or standard four legged chair user that includes an adjustable frame to suit the users size. The frame includes a two section longitudinal center member which can be elongated or shortened then locked in a selected position by a detent pin inserted into holes formed in the sides of both sections of the center member. The adjustable frame supports at least one radius arm with foot pedals attached by a connecting rod. A shock absorbing damper and elastic bands are provided for leg exercise resistance arid return force. The adjustable frame has a square tubular end member attached horizontally for retaining tire leg exerciser to the wheelchair or chair. Retaining plates are provided at opposing ends of the horizontal end member preventing separation of tire exerciser from the chairs. Retaining plates may have bracing and contouring.
A wheelchair mobility system includes a wheelchair with an operator interface that controls the wheelchair and is connectable to a vehicle controllable through a drive-by-wire control so that it controls the vehicle. The wheelchair has a battery that may be recharged by the vehicle when the interface is connected. A method for enabling a wheelchair-bound person to drive a vehicle includes providing an operator-interface on a wheelchair usable for driving the wheelchair, providing access on the vehicle for receiving the wheelchair onboard the vehicle and providing a connector for connecting the operator interface and the vehicle so that the operator interface is usable for driving the vehicle. A method for the wheelchair-bound to drive includes driving a wheelchair through an operator interface, accessing a vehicle while wheelchair-bound and connecting the operator interface to the vehicle for controlling the vehicle.
